Canaries, cheese and sentinel trees.
Since the 1970's there has been a steady increase in the numbers of tree pests and diseases and an accompanying need to monitor for both known and unknown problems. With an estimated 3 billion trees in the UK it's not possible to watch every single one, so how can we keep an eye out for potential problems? During the course of this webinar Matt delves into the concept of sentinel trees, why they're an important part of our integrated approach to pest and disease detection, and how they fit within the Observatree project. Matt Parratt joined the Observatree team in September 2022 as Scientific co-ordinator and leads on planning and delivering training to the 200 volunteers, and production of tree pest and disease resources. This webinar was recorded on 30th October and forms part of the Observatree 10 year celebrations.
